It’s a potential life-changing event—yet so many people get it wrong. I’m talking about going for an interview for a position you really want; one that could have a dramatic impact on the rest of your life.

So, why is it that so many prospective employees don’t seem to grasp the essentials of getting the interviewer to fall in love with them and make a commitment to hire them?

Personal SWOT Analysis

You are most likely to succeed in life if you use your talents to their fullest extent. Similarly, you’ll suffer fewer problems if you know what your weaknesses are, and if you manage these weaknesses so that they don’t matter in the work you do.

So how you go about identifying these strengths and weaknesses, and analyzing the opportunities and threats that flow from them? SWOT Analysis is a useful technique that helps you do this.

What makes SWOT especially powerful is that, with a little thought, it can help you uncover opportunities that you would not otherwise have spotted. And by understanding your weaknesses, you can manage and eliminate threats that might otherwise hurt your ability to move forward.

If you look at yourself using the SWOT framework, you can start to separate yourself from your peers, and further develop the specialized talents and abilities you need to advance your career.

The Only 4 Dimensions That Matter In Hiring (& Why You’re Probably Evaluating Them Wrong)

Does this sound familiar? You interview a candidate who has deep knowledge of your industry and checks off every box in the ‘skills’ section of the job description. They assure you that they are the perfect fit for the position, able to hit the ground running on day one. They look great on paper and seem to be excited about the job. You make an offer, the employee starts working, and soon you are inundated with red flags and problems coming at you from all sides.

What went wrong? You didn’t assess the two most important criteria for any new hire: personal characteristics and motivation.

There are four key hiring dimensions: #1 personal characteristics, #2 motivation, #3 skills and #4 knowledge. In the above scenario, the focus was on just skills and knowledge. And while these are still critical to predicting the success of a potential hire, they should take a backseat to personal characteristics and motivation.

5 Ways to Look Relaxed During a Job Interview

Few people actually like job interviewing. It’s nerve-wracking trying to show your “best” self to a perfect stranger. You’re trying to prove you’re the man or woman for the job and that you can handle stressful situations like this one. That’s not easy, but there are some ways to pull yourself together and feel more confident.

 Even if you’re getting butterflies during your next interview, here are five ways to at least look less nervous.

Prepare solid talking points. It’s always best to over-prepare for possible questions by not only researching the company and the person interviewing you, but also by preparing answers and practicing those responses. “Review the skills and experiences requested in the job announcement and have two to three examples of how you have demonstrated each one,” said Distinguished Toastmaster and career consultant Jennifer Blanck. “This will strengthen your answers and allow you to show how your experience is relevant to the job or organization for which you’re interviewing.”
