How to Pull Off One More Career Win Before the Year’s Over

How many times have you already said that you can’t believe it’s September? And then went through your mental list of everything you said you’d accomplish this year way back in January and felt resigned to the fact that those will now have to be 2018 goals?

Well, before you write off the year, I have a little bit of good news for you. And that good news is that there’s still plenty you can do to set and achieve a new career goal by the end of the year!

Here’s are four steps that’ll get you to where you want to be:

1. Document Your Goal

Your goal might be to get a promotion with your current company. Or you might want a fresh start at a new job. Or, perhaps you just want to learn a new skill.

Whatever you’re hoping to do this year, start by tuning out what everyone around you is working toward right now. No really, forget their goals and focus on your own. After all, just because Jaime wants a promotion, doesn’t mean that’s what you should want.

Once you’re focused on you, write your goal down somewhere that’ll you see it a lot. A sticky note on your bathroom mirror, a reminder in your phone, a tattoo on your hand—whatever you know will work best.

For example, last year I stayed on top of my goal by setting a calendar event for December 31st and creating monthly reminders for the first day of every month. This might sound silly (and maybe even a little annoying), but it really kept me on top of things.

15 Habits of Self-Made Millionaires

Success doesn’t crop up overnight. All self-made millionaires had to start somewhere.

Much of their transformation from ordinary to seven-figure status can be attributed to “rich habits,” a term coined by Thomas C. Corley, who spent five years researching the daily habits of 177 self-made millionaires.

“From my research, I discovered that daily habits dictate how successful or unsuccessful you will be in life,” he writes in his 2016 book “Change Your Habits, Change Your Life.”

“There is a cause and effect associated with habits. Habits are the cause of wealth, poverty, happiness, sadness, stress, good relationships, bad relationships, good health, or bad health.”

The good news is all habits can be changed, Corley notes. Here are some “rich habits” of self-made millionaires that you can start developing today:

They read consistently.
The rich would rather be educated than entertained. As Corley writes, “Eighty-eight percent of the rich devote thirty minutes or more each day to self-education or self-improvement reading … Most did not read for entertainment … The rich read to acquire or maintain knowledge.”

Corley found that they tend to read three types of books: biographies of successful people, self-help or personal development, and history.

How to Overcome Perfectionism: 6 Powerful Habits

One of the most common challenges that people email me about – and I myself have had quite a bit of trouble with – is perfectionism.

It’s an issue that can hold you back in life. Not only from achieving and finishing what you want.

But sometimes from even getting started. While at the same time draining your self-esteem and getting you stuck in a negative spiral where it can become harder and harder to start moving forward.

So today I’d like to share 6 things that have helped me – and still helps me to this day – with this destructive and distracting thought habit.

 

1. Go for good enough.

Aiming for perfection usually winds up in a project or something else never being finished. So go for good enough instead.

Don’t use it as an excuse to slack off. But simply realize that there is something called good enough and when you are there then you are finished with whatever you are doing.

What Type of Job Hopper Are You?

I confess: I’m a job-hopper. Just a glance at my resume gives it away… one year each at my first two jobs, five years at my third job, 20 months at my fourth job, one year at my fifth job, three-and-a-half years at my sixth job… I could go on, but you get the picture. I am on my ninth job in 15 years.

That’s one reason a recent story by Bryan Borzykowski for BBC Capital (that’s the site I edit now, in job number nine) really caught my eye. It asked: Are you job hopping to nowhere? I was afraid to find out the answer.

Job-hopping, that is, moving from company to company every two years or so, is becoming more common. And with that commonality, some of the stigma associated with not staying one place very long is also fading–sometimes. And that’s the key. I have found that the circumstances around moving from job to job matter far more than longevity at a prior employer.

3 Power Plays Millennials Can Use to Avoid an Epic Career Fail

This is an email I got from a Millennial client this week:

Dear J.T.,

I recently graduated from college. I did an internship my senior year tied to my major and realized I don’t want to be in the field. It’s been four months, and I’m still trying to find a new career path and first job. I’m having a lot of trouble and am stressed. My biggest fear is I’ll be overqualified for the work and be unhappy.

My response was:

The last thing you should worry about is being overqualified. In fact, your goal should be to find a job where you are ridiculously overqualified.

Qualifications Without Third-Party Validation Aren’t of Value

Millennials are the most educated generation to ever enter the work force. However, a college degree doesn’t provide proof of skill. Learning how to do something and doing it skillfully are two very different things. Employers know that. It’s why they put you in entry-level jobs where you feel overqualified. They want to see you exceed expectations so you can earn their trust and respect. This is how you fast-track your career and move on to work that leverages your strengths and lets you continue to grow.

7 Ways You’re Sabotaging Your Promotion

Climbing the corporate ladder is a career priority for many modern professionals. Higher status within an organization means greater influence, greater responsibilities, a greater sense of impact, and of course, a higher pay grade. To the unambitious, promotions are something doled out in time, once a superior realizes how long you’ve been around and how much you’ve learned. To feistier candidates, promotions are a prize to be fought for, the result of tenacious hard work and constant attempts at self-improvement.

Regardless of your approach and your degree of commitment to earning your next promotion, there are several habits that can interfere with your chances of success–and you may not even realize you have them. Be wary of these seven common ways employees sabotage their chances of moving up:

1. Taking Credit for Things You Didn’t Do. This professional sin is easy to avoid in the obvious context–for example, most workers wouldn’t try to steal credit for a co-worker’s report. However, there’s a more subtle way this action can manifest itself. For example, if you’re a part of a team responsible for directing and executing a new marketing campaign and the campaign is a success, it might look bad if you try to make it seem like the result of your effort and work more than that of your team. Be sure to give credit to everyone involved, and never take credit for work you weren’t involved with.
